(CNN) — South African track star Oscar Pistorius, charged with murdering girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, has applied for more lenient bail restrictions, including permission to travel overseas, a family spokesman said Monday.

Pistorius also is trying to sell some assets to settle legal bills, spokesman Johan van Wyk told CNN. His Pretoria home and his racehorses are among the items Pistorius is trying to sell, according to his family.

But the sprinter’s family denied BBC reports Monday that he’s suicidal as he awaits trial in what prosecutors say was the premeditated death of Steenkamp. Pistorius acknowledges killing her, but says it was an accident.

The BBC3 report is based on statements from a man the network described as a close family friend who called Pistorius a “broken man.”

“I would go as far to say that he could be on the verge of suicide,” the network quoted Mike Azzie as saying for an upcoming BBC documentary.

Pistorius repeatedly broke down and sobbed during a bail hearing last month, and the runner’s uncle, Arnold Pistorius, acknowledged in a statement that his nephew “will never be the same” after killing Steenkamp.

But the uncle said he’s far from suicidal.

“Oscar, broken as he currently is, believes he has a purpose in life and is working towards that. Media reports to the contrary are untrue,” Arnold Pistorius said.

Not everyone surprised at Oscar Pistorius’ fall from grace

Authorities charged Pistorius with premeditated murder last month after he shot Steenkamp in his Pretoria home on February 14.

The Olympic and Paralympic sprinter, known as the “Blade Runner” for competing on carbon fiber blades fitted to the stumps of his amputated legs, said he thought Steenkamp was an intruder. Prosecutors argue he intentionally killed her after a loud argument.

A judge ordered Pistorius released on bail last month.

Among the bail conditions: He cannot return to the home where the shooting happened, had to give up his passport, cannot go near an airport and cannot drink alcohol.

Outrage grows over teen’s gang rape

(CNN) — A dog would have been treated better than Anene Booyson, her neighbors said.

The 17-year-old South African girl was gang raped then mutilated to death in Bredasdorp, a tiny, rural town about two hours southeast of Cape Town, authorities said.

It’s the kind of story that happens too often in South Africa, where a provincial official said violence against females is “systemic.” Some 71% of women report having been victims of sexual abuse, the government notes.

But for whatever reason — perhaps the sheer brutality, perhaps a new awareness to the matter — the rape and killing of Booyson has been different. It has stirred outrage in Bredasdorp and, in fact, throughout South Africa, from people shocked that a young woman like Booyson could suffer so much.

“I don’t know what we must do, but we must do something,” said Sophia Europa, from Bredasdorp, fighting off tears. “Otherwise, there is no use giving birth to a baby boy if men treat women lower than animals.”

A security guard found Booyson’s body February 2 at a construction site not far from where she lived, police Capt. F.C. Van Wyk said.

Booyson’s injuries were so severe that her family asked authorities not to give details, said Faiza Steyn, a Western Cape Health Department spokeswoman.

Opinion: End culture of rape in 2013

Booyson’s aunt, Wilma Brooks, said Booyson lived long enough to identify one of her attackers. Brooks and Albert Fritz, Western Cape provincial minister of social development, said the accused man had been a family friend.

“He was a lovely child to have in the house,” Brooks said. “He was her friend, and it’s just incomprehensible.”

That individual and two others have been arrested, said Fritz, who added that more arrests could be coming. Two of those arrested have been charged with murder and rape, the same charges the third will face, Fritz said.

Chanting “No violence! No violence,” scores in Bredasdorp marched in the streets toward the crime scene. While statistics show that rape is common in South Africa, residents say such violence typically doesn’t come to this rural community. Fritz called the attack “very uncharacteristic of the town.”

Fritz noted a few factors that may have played a part in the attack. One is the trend of urban gangs infiltrating the countryside, sometimes doing initiation acts like “drawing blood,” Fritz said. Another is the relationship between alcohol and violence, with special attention paid to shebeens, bars where drinks flow freely and illegally. Lastly, Fritz said that many perpetrators of such crimes don’t have fathers — and, in some cases, any adult male role model — in their lives.

There’s no denying that sexual violence is not new to South Africa. But Fritz said that may change with Booyson’s death.

“This … murder of this incredibly young beautiful woman has become a tipping point,” he said.

Every four minutes a local radio station broadcasts a ping — a reminder that a person is raped in South Africa, on average, every four minutes.

Terry Volkwyn, the CEO of Primedia Broadcasting, said this initiative quickly stirred an “absolutely overwhelming … outpouring of rage and emotion.”

“We all know the statistics, and we read them,” Volkwyn said. “But when you’re sitting listening to the radio … when that little beep sound drops all the time, eventually after about an hour, you can’t believe … there goes another one.”

President Jacob Zuma has weighed in amid the outcry.

“The whole nation is outraged at this extreme violation and destruction of a young human life,” he said. “This act is shocking, cruel and most inhumane. It has no place in our country. We must never allow ourselves to get used to these acts of base criminality to our women and children.”

Zuma called on the courts to “impose the harshest sentences on such crimes, as part of a concerted campaign to end this scourge in our society.”

This week, a group of women — some of whom did not even know Booyson — buried a cross in the dusty sand of a construction site in Bredasdorp where police say the girl was raped.

The funeral for the teenager will be Saturday. But people in her hometown, and elsewhere in South Africa, are vowing that she will be remembered for a long time to come.

Outrage over brutal South Africa death

Judge: Namibians sterilized

August 1st, 2012 No comments

(CNN) — A judge ruled Monday that three HIV-positive women in Namibia were sterilized without their informed consent, their lawyer said.

But the high court judge said the women did not provide enough evidence to prove that they were sterilized because they were HIV-positive, according to attorney Amon Ngavetene.

The judge has not yet decided on awarding damages in the case, said Ngavetene, coordinator of the AIDS Law Unit at the Legal Assistance Centre. The women were seeking 1.2 million Namibian dollars (about $150,000) in compensation.

The center is representing 18 women, alleging that public hospitals sterilized them without their informed consent.

Namibian authorities have denied accusations that forced sterilizations have been a matter of government policy.

Emilia Handumbo, one of the HIV-positive women suing the government, told CNN last year that she was given documents to sign while she was in labor and about to give birth in a public hospital.

Watch: Forced sterilization in Africa

“I thought they were papers for the caesarian, but then the nurse said to me, ‘I think they are going to close you,’” she said.

Thanks to anti-AIDS drugs, Handumbo gave birth to a healthy, HIV-negative baby.

But then the letters “BTL” appeared in her hospital file. The letters, she later learned, stood for bilateral tubal ligation, a form of sterilization.

Attorney Corinna van Wyk said Handumbo is one of many women who are victims of a broken health system.

“Doctors are taking advantage of them,” van Wyk said.

‘The damage is permanent, obviously, not only physically. These women are discriminated against culturally because they can no longer bear children,” she said.

Human rights groups say that the high profile nature of Monday’s case has done little to change the conduct of some health care workers in Namibia, alleging that more HIV-positive women who claim they were forcibly sterilized are still coming forward.

A study from the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS and the Namibia Women’s Health Network unearthed 40 cases in three of the country’s regions.

AIDS activist Jenny Gatsi-Mallet, who helped conduct the research, said doctors working for the state have told her they were just following guidelines.

“They are saying that these guidelines came into being when AIDS first came into the country, and I think that was in 2001, and it was a directive that says any woman who tests positive for HIV should be sterilized straight away,” Gatsi-Mallet said.

But Dr. Norbert Forster, deputy permanent secretary of Namibia’s health ministry, told CNN last year that the sterilization of HIV-positive women was “not at all” an official policy.

“That is not our position,” he said, adding that forcing women to sign consent documents “would not be in line” with the government’s policy.

(CNN) — After a historic day that saw Michael Phelps become the most decorated Olympian ever, the 2012 Summer Games promise more spellbinding drama Wednesday. Here are five things to watch for:

1) Gymnastics: A chance for redemption

Kohei Uchimura came to London as the favorite for the men’s all-around title. But his disastrous final performance in the team final Monday rattled Japan and, undoubtedly, the three-time world champion’s nerves.

If Uchimura cracks again, Americans Danell Leyva and John Orozco could steal the show. But both U.S. men are grappling with a devastating fifth-place finish in the team final, with uncharacteristic falls.

The men’s individual all-around final starts at 11:30 a.m. London time (6:30 a.m. ET).

2) Cycling: Hit the road, Union Jacks

Bradley Wiggins, the first British winner of the Tour de France in its 99-year history, will be gunning for the history books again when he competes in the road cycling time trial. Wiggins has already won six medals in Olympic track cycling; one more medal would make him the most decorated British Olympian.

Wiggins won two time trials at the Tour but could be challenged by defending champion Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland, who was injured in a mighty crash during Saturday’s road race. But Wiggins’ bigger opponent Wednesday could be the expected blustery conditions.

The time trial starts at 2:15 p.m. London time (9:15 a.m. ET).

3) Swimming: Medals abound

France’s Yannick Agnel has his eyes set on a fourth medal in the men’s 100-meter freestyle, but he faces stiff competition from world champion James Magnussen of Australia.

American Allison Schmitt will also go for a fourth medal when the United States competes in the women’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay.

Medals will also be awarded in the women’s 200-meter butterfly and the men’s 200-meter breaststroke.

And fresh off winning his record-breaking 19th Olympic medal Tuesday, U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps gets back in the pool Wednesday for the qualifying round of the 200-meter individual medley. Fellow American Ryan Lochte, the event’s world record holder, will compete in a separate heat.

The events start at 11:06 a.m. London time (6:06 a.m. ET).

4) Diving: A Chinese gold rush?

World champions Qin Kai and Luo Yutong are expected to give China its fourth diving gold Wednesday in the men’s synchronized 3-meter springboard competition.

But Mexico’s Yahel Castillo Huerto and Julian Sanchez Gallegos, though inexperienced as a team, could contend for a medal in the six-dive event.

The 3-meter springboard final starts at 3 p.m. London time (10 a.m. ET).

5) Tennis: The Venus and Serena show

Two-time defending Olympic champs Venus and Serena Williams are expected to unleash their prowess during a quarterfinal round of women’s doubles. The American sisters will take on the Italian team of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci.

But both the Williams sisters will have to recover quickly from singles matches earlier in the day. Serena plays Vera Zvonareva of Russia while Venus faces world No. 7 Angelique Kerber of Germany.

The doubles match begins at 2:30 p.m. London time (9:30 a.m. ET).
